The Process Behind Dye Sublimation on Aluminum
Each image is printed in reverse onto a transfer paper using dye-based ink, which is then adhered to a polymer coated sheet of aluminum. The aluminum is then placed in a heat press, where it undergoes extreme heat and pressure. The high temperature and pressure cause the solid dyes on the transfer paper to sublimate into gas. The gas penetrates the coating on the metal and bonds at a molecular level. Once cooled, the ink becomes solid again and is permanently fused with the aluminum.
Benefits of Dye Sublimation on Aluminum
The sublimation process results in extremely detailed, dimensional prints that cannot be rivaled by other printing methods (such as canvas or paper). We often get comments that prints appear 3D, or as if you’re looking out a window.
Our prints are archival quality, lasting 65+ years.
Aluminum prints are more able to resist changes in temperature and moisture levels versus other printing methods, making them ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, or outdoors.
Though extremely durable, aluminum prints are lightweight. Our 40x60 prints weigh about 15 pounds.
Prints are incredibly easy to hang. Mounting hardware is included with your purchase.
No acrylic or glass glazing is required. After the sublimation process, the print is ready to be displayed.
